Roundup Cancer Lawsuits Lawyer
Consumers have the right to feel safe when using any products in their home. Whether the product contains harmful ingredients that aren’t properly researched for safety, or there aren’t proper warning labels on products that should be used with caution, the safety of consumers is the manufacturer’s responsibility.
Unfortunately, there are products on the market that aren’t safe, and sometimes it results in consumers becoming ill or injured. Several products in the Roundup family of weed killers, produced by Monsanto, have now come to light as the possible cause for certain types of cancers.
If you have been exposed to Roundup products regularly and have developed cancer, there may be a connection. Ligori & Sanders Attorneys at Law in Tampa are experienced product liability lawyers and can help to determine your next steps.
The Danger of Roundup Weed Killer
It is one particular ingredient used to make several of the Roundup weed killer products that has been linked to cancer. This ingredient, glyphosate, is regularly used to kill unwanted plants in both residential applications and large agricultural operations. Roundup is not the only brand to market products containing glyphosate, but they are the largest. In fact, Roundup weed killer products are the most widely used in the United States.
Not all Roundup products contain glyphosate. Those that contain glyphosate include:
- Roundup Ready
- Roundup Original Max, or Roundup OMax
- Roundup PowerMAX
- Roundup WeatherMAX
- Roundup Weed & Grass Killer
- Roundup Super Concentrate
- Roundup Precision Gel
Several of these products, such as Roundup Original Max, may come in concentrated forms that should be diluted before use in a separately purchased weed sprayer, as well as ready-to-use forms usually in bottles with attached sprayers.
Possible Health Risks
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, funded several extensive studies that looked into the link between glyphosate and certain cancers. They also compiled the research from large studies conducted internationally, in countries such as Canada, Columbia, Sweden and Australia. The combined research has strongly suggested a positive link between certain cancers and the chemical glyphosate used as an herbicide.
The cancers that were found to be most common with regular glyphosate exposure in this IARC Glyphosate Study were:
- Certain types of lymphoma, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL)
- Leukemia (cancer of the bone marrow)
- Multiple myeloma (cancer of plasma cells within the blood)
If you have already been diagnosed with any of these cancers, it’s possible there is a link to your regular use of glyphosate-containing products such as Roundup. If you are experiencing stomach upset, extreme fatigue, cognitive deficiencies or other symptoms, then you may need to seek further medical tests through your primary care provider.
Types of Exposure
Part of what has made Roundup weed killer products so detrimental to such a large population of consumers is that you can be exposed to it in several different ways. This differs from some other types of chemicals that must either be ingested or inhaled to have a negative effect. You can suffer from glyphosate exposure through:
- Breathing Contaminated Air: This is especially common in farm workers who use the herbicide regularly, or in the population surrounding the farms that use it.
- Drinking Contaminated Water: The chemicals from glyphosate-containing Roundup products can seep into groundwater and contaminate a well that is used for drinking water.
- Eating Contaminated Foods: Foods that are grown on farms or even in home gardens that have used these herbicides can transfer toxic amounts of glyphosate to consumers.
- Touching the Product or Contaminated Plants: If you’ve used Roundup weed killer in your garden, you may have touched it with your skin during application or touched plants with the chemical on it later.
Many people who have been exposed to these dangerous weed killers have been exposed in multiple ways.
If You Have Been Diagnosed With Cancer
If you have been diagnosed with cancer and you regularly used Roundup weed killer in and around your own home, or you live near a large farm that does, it is important to determine what health issues may have been caused by exposure to glyphosate. You should also know what your options are when seeking compensation for medical care, lost income due to health problems, or even to help pay for any services you will need now that you can’t complete tasks on your own.
