All types of injuries occur in a car accident. If asked, most would identify head injuries, brain injuries, spinal injuries and whiplash as some of the most common types of car accident injuries – and they would be correct. One type that is not usually identified is leg injuries. Many types of impacts in a car accident can cause severe injuries to the legs due to their proximity to the lower area of the car.
In fact, leg injuries are among the five most common types of car accident injuries. Leg injuries can range from minor to severe, depending on the type of car accident and many other contributing factors.
- Cuts and Bruises: In almost any impact accident, contact with the bottom of the dashboard or lower door can cause cuts and bruises on the legs.
- Strains and Sprains: Many sudden impacts can cause sprained ankles or strained muscles and tendons in the leg or knee.
- Broken Bones: Again, forceful contact with the lower dash or door components can cause broken bones, especially if the car is partially crushed and car components are forced into the seat area.
- Hip Dislocations: Sudden, forceful impact from the front or side can cause a dislocation or breakage in the hip joint.
- Amputation: In severe circumstances, a powerful crushing impact can actually amputate one or both legs in a catastrophic car accident.
If you are in a car accident and sustain a leg injury, it is best to remain in the vehicle if it is safe and wait for emergency personnel. They can remove you from the vehicle using techniques to keep your legs intact and prevent further injuries. Always try to stop any bleeding from the legs you can see and remain as still as possible while waiting for help.
