Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are one of the clearest warning signs of neglect in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. These painful wounds are not a natural part of aging. They are preventable injuries that occur when vulnerable residents are not given the attention and care they deserve. Why Bedsores Happen
Bedsores form when residents are left in one position for too long without being moved. Pressure on the skin reduces blood flow, leading to tissue damage. In properly staffed and attentive facilities, immobile residents are repositioned every two hours, monitored closely for early signs of skin breakdown, and provided with appropriate bedding and cushions.
When facilities are understaffed, undertrained, or indifferent, residents may be left unattended for long periods of time. This neglect allows bedsores to develop and worsen, sometimes progressing to life-threatening infections. Bedsores are classified into four stages, with the most advanced stages involving deep tissue damage, exposed muscle or bone, and high risks of sepsis.
Signs and Symptoms Families Should Watch For
Families should be alert to any indication of skin breakdown, especially in areas where pressure is most likely to build, such as the heels, tailbone, hips, and elbows. Warning signs include:
- Red or discolored patches of skin that do not fade when pressed
- Open sores, blisters, or ulcers
- Pus or drainage from wounds
- Swelling, warmth, or foul odor from the affected area
- Complaints of pain in bony areas where pressure is applied
- Signs of systemic infection such as fever, confusion, or rapid heartbeat
Bedsores can progress quickly. A small red mark can become a severe, infected wound in a matter of days if not treated properly.
